FORT MYERS, Fla. – The driver of a vehicle that crashed on Summerlin Road Monday night suffered a “fatal wound” before hitting a concrete retainer wall, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office said.

Investigators did not exactly say how Friedrich “Fritz” Dirk Timmermann, 43, died.

The incident closed the roadway in both directions between Maple Road and College Parkway until early Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities spent Tuesday morning combing the area and going into nearby neighborhoods, looking for evidence possibly related to an overnight shooting.

Hunter Park residents, in the Pine Manor neighborhood, say they heard multiple gunshots around 8:30 p.m.- 9 p.m. on Monday.

“When it’s so close to my house, I mean, I heard the gunshots from where my kids bedrooms at,” said Sasha Delacruz. “A bullet could come through their wall easy, so it is concerning.”
