Police searching for Fort Myers shooter

FORT MYERS, Fla. – No arrests have been made after one person was shot Monday morning at 2571 Parkway St., Fort Myers police said.

Jamorris Leon Byrd, 30, was standing outside the residence at about 10 a.m. when he was shot, police said. He was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital as a trauma alert but later died.

Fort Myers Middle Academy, which is near the shooting location, was temperately placed on lockdown as a safety precaution.

Neighbors said they were making breakfast or reading the paper when they heard gunshots.

“I just heard somebody empty a clip out of the gun, you heard it “Pop, pop, pop!,” one neighbor said. “It was no mistaking it was gunfire.”

The street quickly filled with police officers and roads were blocked off, a neighbor, Bob Michael said.

“First I just thought they were shooting rounds off until the police showed up and said somebody was laying on the ground and they were in pretty bad shape,” Michael said.

Police are searching for at least one shooter involved in the incident. They are also looking for a silver or grey Ford SUV that neighbors said sped off after the shooting.
