Taste of Pine Island cancelled due to weather

PINE ISLAND, Fla. – Six tornadoes and record-breaking rain has pummeled parts of Southwest Florida since the beginning of the year. Although Phillip Parks on Pine Island looks okay from far away, the Kiwanis Club says it’s not suitable for their big event scheduled for this weekend.

“It’s a beautiful little league field here and little league is being played now and even though it looks dry and it’s certainly a beautiful day out today, the grass and the soil is soggy,” Mike Shelvin, a member of the Kiwanis Club said.

Thousands of people were expected at the annual Taste of Pine Island, but the field is still soggy and they say it is too much of a risk.

“We have big bandstand that’s here, we have thousands of people walking around so we’re all worried it will ruin our little league field.”

The original weekend for the event was actually in January, but rain also put a damper on it then too.

“This was our reschedule this weekend,” Shelvin said. “But there’s nothing we can do.”

The money made at Taste of Pine Island goes to the Kiwanis Club which uses it for scholarships for students on the island.

“It’s an event that we like to put on and we do other events but this is our main one for the scholarship,” Shelvin explained.

They say some vendors who already paid to be apart of the event donated their money to the club.

They say they’re hoping for drier weather next year.

“You take it and you live with it and tomorrow’s tomorrow and next year’s next year. We’ll all be fine.”
