OWENSBORO, Ky. (WFIE)- A man is recovering from severe burns after he says an e-cigarette exploded in his pocket.

Surveillance video from a Shell gas station shows Josh Hamilton making a quick stop to buy snacks.

As Hamilton walks over to the cashier to pay, the e-cigarette battery in his pocket explodes.

“He was giving me money. He put his hand in his pocket and suddenly there was a blast in his pocket,” said Jassie Singh, a gas station employee. “There was fire, big fire and he was burning.”

Singh says he wasn’t sure what was going on when he saw Hamilton on fire.

“I was shocked! I was like ‘what was that? You have a bomb in your pocket?’ said Manoj Kumar, another employee. “I was totally shocked and just like this my hands were on my head.”

Hamilton ran outside the door, past Kumar where he struggled to get his burning pants off.

The video shows Singh coming out from behind the counter where he sprays Hamilton with a fire extinguisher.

Another customer drove Hamilton to the hospital where he was treated for second-degree burns on his leg.
