Code enforcement looking to regulate signs along US 41 in Port Charlotte

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla.- Code enforcement is cracking down on illegal signs along U.S. 41 in Port Charlotte.

“We wanna work with people, we want them to realize we’re not trying to beat them up, but we are trying to clean up the corridor,” said zoning official Shaun Cullinan.

Code enforcement officials are keeping an eye out for temporary signs, parked trucks with advertisements and flutter flags. Some of the signs may be permitted, but others are illegal.

“It’s going to take time, this isn’t an overnight fix,” said Cullinan. “It took a lot of years for it to get this bad, it’s going to take some time to get it cleaned up a bit.”

“It’s way overdue, way overdue,” said David Cohn, owner of Sweet Repeats Consignment Boutique, who says he’s in favor of cleaning up U.S. 41. “They definitely need to make some changes that would make the community as a whole look more appealing.”

Others say the county is over-stepping their bounds.

“Have no problems with rules and regulations, everybody has to live with them, but not to the point where it works against small business who need all the help that they can get,” said barbershop owner Eric Popovich. “The signs help identify what’s in that block.”

Business owners who have illegal signs will only receive a warning for now, but Charlotte County officials say they may eventually write tickets.
