2 escape from San Carlos Park home before explosion

SAN CARLOS PARK, Fla. – A mother and her son are looking for a new place to stay after flames ripped through their San Carlos Park home Sunday night.

The exact cause of the fire will not be determined for several days, authorities said Monday. But fire investigators said it started on the home’s patio and spread quickly.

It was paired with at least one explosion that created panic for neighbors and even sent people running for cover.

“There were two big explosions and then everybody was just freaking out and people from who didn’t even live on the street they seen it and came driving over here and they’re like ‘Oh my gosh! What happened?'” a witness said.

The mother and son said they were inside the home when they began to smell smoke. They stepped outside moments before hearing explosions.

The explosions were likely caused when the fire reached propane tanks in the backyards, fire investigators said.

Family friends said the pair lived in the home for more than three decades. The home has since been boarded and labeled dangerous.

The woman and her son were seen searching through debris for items they could salvage.
