FORT MYERS, Fla. – Southwest Florida school districts received decent marks in grade results released by the state Department of Education on Friday:

  • Charlotte: B
  • Collier: A
  • DeSoto: C
  • Glades: C
  • Hendry: C
  • Lee: B

School grades were linked to the state’s new high-stakes test – Florida Standards Assessment – which is based primarily on Common Core standards.

The grades were delayed because the state had to create passing scores for the new test. School superintendents didn’t want the grades released this year based on the test’s controversial roll out last year.

Preliminary grades for the state’s 3,219 schools show:

  • 1,169 received an ‘A’
  • 642 received a ‘B’
  • 859 received a ‘C’
  • 365 received a ‘D’
  • 184 received an ‘F’

The release of the scores come as the Lee County School District launched a new campaign this week titled “More than a Grade.”

“Since its inception, the grading formula has failed to capture the complete picture of what happens in our schools each day and yet it has managed to dominate conversations about the apparent success or failure of a school,” Lee County School Superintendent Greg Adkins said in a letter to parents. “Grades have become an important part of our academic system, but we must acknowledge that our students are more than a grade.”
