MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) – Studies have long shown the health benefits of yoga, but a Miami cardiologist is conducting a study to determine whether hot yoga improves vascular function and blood flow, especially for patients with hypertension and other vascular issues.

Dr. Carlos Zamora decided to conduct the study after he said patients often asked him whether it was safe to practice yoga in rooms heated between 95 and 105 degrees.

He plans to study participants as they practice hot yoga twice a week for 90 minutes a session during a six-week period. The Mount Sinai Medical Center doctor will measure participants’ arterial function in a 15-minute test before, during and after the study to see how well the participants’ arteries relax and dilate to allow more blood supply where it is needed.
