E8 responding well to treatment at CROW

SANIBEL, Fla.- E8 is responding well to treatment at the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) and will not have to undergo surgery.

The eaglet was rescued on Tuesday after viewers spotted fishing line wrapped around its foot.

“I cut him free from the nest and removed the line from his leg, and we immediately tried to get circulation established,” said Heather Barron, hospital director at CROW. “There was significant soft tissue swelling and with that loss of circulation, there has been some nerve deficit. He doesn’t seem to know where his toes are right now.”

On Wednesday, CROW staff gave the eaglet medicine, fed him breakfast, and put warm packs on his injured foot.

“He’s just a hungry baby who’s excited about all the good grub he’s getting,” Barron said.

Barron adds that fans of the Southwest Florida Eagle Cam made all the difference in the eaglet’s rescue.

“I think he’s very lucky. People out there were paying attention,” Barron said.

“Absolutely great! I’m glad he’s getting fed well. It seems like the bigger one hogs the food,” said Judy Maxim, an eagle fanatic.

Back out at the nest, spectators are missing the fourth member of the eagle family, but they’re glad the eaglet is getting care.

“Was worried and very glad to see something was going to be done about,” Maxim said.

The eaglet will not be return to its nest until both feet are functioning.
