Woman dies, officer injured in South Florida crash

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. (AP) – A woman is dead and a police officer is injured following an early morning crash near the Pembroke Lakes Mall in South Florida.

Pembroke Pines police say the crash occurred around 2:15 a.m. Thursday.

Police Capt. Al Xiques says six witnesses told investigators that an Infinity driven by 24-year-old Jessica Lee Bonilla ran a red light and was struck by an SUV driven by Officer Olayemi Okegbola.

The Sun Sentinel (http://bit.ly/1nABCFJ ) reports both drivers were taken to a hospital where Bonilla died around 5:30 a.m. the officer’s injures were not thought to be life-threatening.

Xiques says based on information obtained at the scene, alcohol “might” have been a contributing factor to the crash. An investigation continues.

Pines Boulevard was closed in both directions for several hours.
