Naples painter arrested for allegedly swindling client

NAPLES, Fla. – A local man was arrested for allegedly swindling a homeowner out of cash for a paint job.

The painter, 43-year-old John Flynn, was released from Collier County jail where he was facing a felony charge of grand theft after his client tried to get a refund for work he did not perform, according to police reports.

The customer paid Flynn $500 upfront with the expectation that he would return to paint her house the next day, according to police reports. The victim said after several days passed without the upgrades to her home or the return of her money, she called police.

Security expert Chris Knott with Naples Security Solutions said victims should contact authorities in cases of suspected contractor fraud.

“Always report it, for sure,” Knott said. “Some people feel dumped. They feel scammed. They are a little embarrassed.”

Knott said clients should not be ashamed of demanding money when paid services are not performed. He also said customers should research companies before handing out cash for any upgrades to their homes.

“First and foremost, always ask for ID either a company ID or trade ID or a business card from their company,” Knott said.

A quick online search for Flynn’s company, Packard Painting, does not produce any results. His company also does not appear to have social media accounts. A police report does not list how Flynn’s client found his company.

Knott suggests that homeowners should check references and online reviews when researching a company. The Better Business Bureau has a list of registered contractors and includes whether they have a history of complaints. It is also important to check the length of time a company has been in business, Knott adds.

Flynn was arrested Monday at his home in Naples, where his work truck was parked outside. There was no company name listed on the truck and family members declined to comment.

He has since been released from jail on bond, but spoke to reporters saying the ordeal was a misunderstanding. Flynn said he has been in business for 17 years and will give the client a call.
