Volunteers prep for Cape tornado relief event

CAPE CORAL, Fla. – Almost 300 volunteers are expected to participate in Thursday’s Cape Coral tornado relief event. The cleanup continues after an EF2 tornado ripped through southwest Cape, Saturday.

Since then, the community has come together to try and make it easier on those trying to rebuild.

One of the event organizers, Megan Reark, says she knows it’s a long road to recovery for the victims.

“We want to try and get their lives back to normal as close as possible to before the storm hit,” said Reark.

In the three days since the storm, donations are pouring in for victims in preparation for Thursday tornado relief event.

Volunteers worked late into Wednesday night to finish up final preparations for the cleanup.

“It’s definitively not going to happen in a day, but with the volunteers we have, we’re hoping to cover a wide area and at least do something,” said Reark. “It’s a small dent in everything that needs to be done.”

Food, water, clothes and other donations for tornado victims are piling up at Grace Community Center and will be available for those in need Thursday. Volunteers are planning to organize the donations so that victims can come pick up what they need at a later date since many are still without a place to stay.

Donation organizer Jill Mullin says she’s been blown away by the community’s response.

“For the community to come the way they have, donated the things they have and not just items but their time it was amazing,” said Mullin. “All victims come. Please come and let us help you.”
