CAPTIVA ISLAND, Fla. – More than 700 vacationers and locals were without power on Captiva Island for nearly 12 hours after a drunk driver plowed into a large cement power pole on Captiva Drive at Blind Pass.

The accident happened around 7:30 p.m. Monday. The driver was then taken into custody for driving impaired.

For several hours and through the overnight, people looking to get onto or off of the island were stuck. Cars lined both sides of Captiva Drive as traffic was shutdown in both directions.

Lee County Electric Cooperative worked to get power restored but said it was difficult to repair due to the location and size of the lines.

Fire officials tell WINK News, the same thing happened in April 2015 and the same pole was hit.

LCEC restored power to all customers just before 7 a.m. Tuesday morning.
