CLEWISTON, Fla.- Forty-eight men arrested in Clewiston for cockfighting are out on bail.

The Hendry County Sheriff’s Office says 83 fighting roosters were found off Utopia Street Saturday in the Montura Ranch Estates community. Authorities say the birds were worth anywhere from $100 to $10,000.

During the raid, deputies say they found items used to encourage the birds to fight, such as knives, scissors, and even medication.

All the birds have been euthanized, said Captain Susan Harrelle with the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office, who added “once the roosters are raised to fight, that’s all you can do with them.”

Harrelle says there was a fighting ring set up inside an illegally built structure on the property.

“This was an invitation-only fight. A lot of the cockfighting that we’ve seen in the past has all been in the open, this was a bit more sophisticated.”

Most of the men arrested were from Dade, Collier, Lee, Hillsborough and Palm Beach County and ranged from 21 to 86 years of age. The men were all charged with fighting and baiting, a 3rd degree felony in Florida, and released on $3,500 bond.
