Last City of Palms tournament at Bishop Verot tips off

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The City of Palms Classic has outgrown Bishop Verot’s High School in Fort Myers.

“It’s going to be crowded come Saturday night. There will be no seating,” says Louis Williams, who has attended the tournament for more than 30 years. Williams says, it gets so packed sometimes they have to turn fans away.

After 22 years in the high school gym, the tournament is changing venues. The 2016 competition will move to Florida Southwestern State College’s new arena. The new gym is currently under construction and is scheduled to be completed by October.

For six days, thousands of fans pack the stands at Bishop Verot knowing they’re seeing some of the best high school players in the country. According to Executive Director of City of Palms Classic John Naylor, 11-percent of NBA players have played in the City of Palms Tournament. The competition draws teams and fans from around the country.

“Local people as well as people from out of town come to see the level of talent that you just don’t see everywhere,” says Naylor.

“We’re big college basketball fans so we like to see the talent and who’s going to what college,” says Phillip Roviaro. We’ve been coming here for 8 years in a row and we love it,” says Roviaro.

While the new gym will hold more than a thousand more people, the move is still bitter sweet for some.

“Some people say it’s not going to be the same at FSW. I’m not sure I believe that,” says Naylor. “The venue is second to the caliber of the game and think people will be just as excited as they get here. “
