MGN PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Drivers in Charlotte County are seeing more law enforcement out on the roads. “We saw a lot of police officers just driving around, they’re just cruising. You definitely notice their presence around,” said Kayle Woods. “I travel through Charlotte County a lot and I see them all over,” said Vivian Grant. This week, officers are canvasing specific intersections in Port Charlotte and Englewood and setting up traps in hopes to save lives. So far this year, 22 people have died on Charlotte County roads, five more than in 2014. “I definitely think that’s sad and that the police presence should help bring that down,” said Chelsea Masich. Florida Highway Patrol says most people are killed by driving too fast and being careless, but texting and driving, and drinking and driving, are factors as well. Now, law enforcement officials are trying to save lives by educating drivers and making themselves more present on roadways. Officers will be paying close attention to: Melbourne Street in Port Charlotte Placida Road, from Rotonda Boulevard West, to SR 776 in Englewood U.S. 41 and Midway Boulevard in Port Charlotte Veterans Boulevard and Atwater Street in Port Charlotte
