FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Highway Patrol has confirmed one person is dead after a pedestrian was hit while crossing the road on U.S. 41 and Pine Drive in Fort Myers, Wednesday night.

State troopers identified the victim as 26-year-old Brittni Gemmell of Cape Coral.

Gemmell’s boyfriend tell WINK News his girlfriend was pregnant. U.S. 41 southbound was blocked off for several hours after the collision.

Donald Lusk said he didn’t see the moment of impact, but witnessed the aftermath of the crash. He says the woman and her boyfriend were trying to cross the road when she was hit by a truck.

“I heard the tires screech, heard the impact, turned and that’s when I started to see things,” said Lusk.

After the crash, a good Samaritan used their truck as a barrier to protect the woman lying in the road.

“I saw them pull out and block traffic off a little bit to get in the way of traffic to keep anybody from hitting her anymore because I’m sure that would have been totally fatal.”

FHP is still investigating the crash. It is unknown if the driver will face any charges.
