While many may enjoy a slice of that sweet treat, there is one large spud that probably won’t be plated anytime soon. Sara Kelly, 88, has been growing produce on her organic Wedgefield farm since the late 1940s with her son Ivan. Last year, they grew a 9-pound sweet potato and they both say the size doesn’t affect the taste. But they were surprised on just how big this sweet potato turned out to be. When asked what her reaction was when it dug it up, she said she squealed like a little girl. “When I first saw it, I said to myself, ‘Good googa bugle’ I said, look at this thing,” said Ivan. It’s not clear how many pies can be made from a 12-pound sweet potato. The family is planning to grow a bigger potato next year.
