MARATHON, Fla. (AP) – Authorities say a street fight in Marathon, Fla., turned ugly Wednesday night when several men attacked Monroe County sheriff’s deputies investigating the beating of a man found with multiple cuts and bruises to his face.

The beating victim, Ignacio Aguila, 48, was found lying in the road on 15th Street with “severe injuries to his face, including swelling, bruising and lacerations,” according to a statement issued Thursday by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Aguila was taken to Fisherman’s Hospital and later airlifted to the Ryder Trauma Center in Miami.

Authorities said two deputies who arrived to investigate, Tyler Hodges and Matthew Pitcher, were accosted by several men who may have been involved in the beating. Two other deputies, Jamie Buxton and Garrett Bragg, later arrived and were able to subdue and arrest three men who were “kicking and striking at the officers.”

Arrested and charged with battery on a law enforcement officer and a related charge were Yacel Maza Hernandez, 27, Asniel Ferrer Espinosa, 23. A third suspect, Yordany Rodriguez Marmol, 24, was charged with resisting arrest. All were jailed.
