FORT MYERS, Fla.- City police officials described the reprimanding of five officers and two supervisors after an internal investigation reveled wrongdoing within the department as “disappointing.”

“You give them opportunities and then they break that trust,” said Fort Myers police Capt. Jim Mulligan.

The punishments resulted from an investigation into claims of former Fort Myers police officer Oscar Basora having sex while on duty.

The inquiry exposed deeper problems within the department, including officers sleeping on the job, eating free breakfast as a hotel about 30 minutes after the start of their shift and working out at a gym when claiming they were on patrol.

Officers are only allowed to work out during their break, Mulligan said.

“You’d be surprised at how quickly we can get this on if need be,” he said. “You throw your vest back on, your gun belt and your shirt and you go. Basically, they work out in their uniform pants and a tee shirt. So, it’s not like they need a full change.”

Mulligan said department leadership did not know of the wrongdoing until the internal investigation.
