Sand sculptures bring FMB to life at annual competition

FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla.- Sixteen solo sculptors and five teams kicked off the sand sculpting competition on Fort Myers Beach on Friday.

The sculptors represent four different countries and over 10 different states.

“This fascinates me,” said Linda Reiner. “I had never been on a first day before to see what getting started involves.”

Local shops and restaurants said they’re ready for big crowds.

Skye’s Mexican and More said they were expecting at least 200 people for the dinner crowd Friday, but the Chamber of Commerce said traffic won’t be as busy on the roads.

“There is no construction going on this weekend and during Thanksgiving week on Fort Myers Beach,” said chamber member Bud Nocera.

Nocera says restaurants, shops and hotels will see the financial impact of the competition.

“Somebody tips that waiter or waitress, then that tip money gets spent in the local economy,” said Nocera.

Locals said they’re just happy about less traffic.

“That’s been a blessing, I tried to get through here before,” said Reiner. “I felt really sorry for shop owners, I would think they really appreciate this.”

The Chamber of Commerce says they encourage everyone visiting the sand sculpting competition to take the Bonita Beach Road entrance and park at Lovers Key. A free shuttle ride will take you to the site.
