FORT MYERS, Fla.- Authorities are crediting a joint task force between the Fort Myers Police Department and Lee County Sheriff’s Office for cracking down on crime in Lee County.

The two law enforcement agencies formed the task force about a month and a half ago, following a night of multiple shootings in Fort Myers.

Twelve police officers and sheriff’s deputies make up the patrols, every day. At a press conference on Thursday, authorities announced 104 people have been arrested, with 45 remaining in custody. Many of the arrests are for violating probation. Officers have also confiscated 12 weapons.

“So far it’s working out very well; taken several more guns off the streets, I think 12 firearms so far, some violent offenders,” Fort Myers Police Chief Dennis Eads said at a press conference.

Criminal defense attorney, Douglas Molloy, says even though bonds are being posted, the task force is still making a difference.

“The perception that the criminal justice system is a revolving door where you get arrested you’re out on the streets the same day–that’s in the movies,” Molloy said.

He also says nabbing the criminals, even on minor charges is key when it comes to finding bigger criminals.

“I think that’s important in their efforts in determining, who are the people that really don’t need to walk among us?”

People who live in Dunbar and are trying to better the community in their own way say they have seen more patrols, but are not sure the task force is the only answer.

“There’s a lot of revenge going on and until they find out the source of that then, you know, they won’t really be able to do anything,” Erick Walker said.

The task force is not just focusing on Fort Myers, officers are also patrolling in Suncoast, Pine Manor, and Lehigh Acres.

The chief says the mug shots of those arrested, show the value of the task force.

“This is your evaluation, individuals who are on probation, have committed violent, criminal acts, and are continuing to do it,” said Eads.
