Former Speaker John Boehner joins LPGA players for golf in Naples

Naples, Fla. – Former Speaker of the House, John Boehner, joined LPGA stars on the course at Tiburon Golf Club in Naples for the Pro-Am leading up to this weekend’s CME Group Tour Championship.

When asked about his golf game, Boehner said, “Playing good. Pretty straight but, you know, it’s golf so it’s going to go everywhere.”

This weekend is the grand finale for the LPGA; the winner of the year-long race wins $1 million.

During today’s practice round, the former Speaker, who says he’s spending the winter in Southwest Florida, is still getting used to retirement.

“Learning to live life without a schedule, without an office, without a job, without much staff,” he said. “It’s going to take a little getting used to,” he continued, “Going from 100 miles an hour to about 10 is pretty hard to do.”

Another person spectators will be watching is Naples native, Kris Tamulis. This is her first time competing in the final tournament of the season. Her invite is, in large part, due to the fact that she won her first LPGA event this year.

“It was a long time coming,” Tamulis said. “I mean, playing on tour for 11 years is a long time without a win. Obviously there is a lot of people that play for a long time and never win, so it was great just to have that experience and to finally say that I am in LPGA first time winner.”

Tamulis says she doesn’t have expectations headed into this weekend’s tournament. Knowing the hometown crowd will be there to watch, however, does add some pressure. She told WINK News, win or lose, after the tournament wraps up, it’ll be time to relax.

“I haven’t taken my trophy out of the box yet,” she said, “I haven’t found a nice place for that in my home. I haven’t really been able to soak in just winning and having my best year on a tour and I’m looking forward to just sitting and enjoying that.”
