War heroes share personal stories as Bonita Springs honors veterans

BONITA SPRINGS, Fla.- Dozens of war heroes shared their stories with the crowds at Riverside Park on Veterans Day.

Josh Wege stood in front of a packed house, remembering his service in the United States Marine Corps.

“In 2009, I found myself in Afghanistan. It was my first tour. My job overseas was to train the Afghan police and Afghan National Army,” said Wege.

Wege says tragedy struck six months into the tour, when his vehicle was hit by an IED.

“The explosion came right through me and it took both my legs below the knee,” said Wege.
Wege and Medal of Honor Recipient Dakota Meyer told the crowd their mission is to teach people to never give up.

“I’m missing both my legs. My day starts a little earlier than most people. Instead of strapping on socks and shoes, I have to strap on legs just to walk, so my mission now is to try to inspire and educate other people,” said Wege.

The park ceremony included a 21 gun salute and a dove release.

Meyer was the guest speaker. In September 2009, he received the Medal of Honor for his actions in Afghanistan.
