TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) – A newspaper has reported that Florida law enforcement agencies shot people an average of once every three days in 2013 and 2014.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal reported Monday that Florida authorities shot at least 249 people in the two-year span, with 162 of the shootings being fatal.

The newspaper reported the numbers after making hundreds of public records requests and combing through hundreds of media reports. Still, it says the statistics are likely incomplete because authorities don’t have to release records for cases that are still pending.

Just over half – about 55 percent – of the officer-involved shootings in 2013 and 2014 involved suspects who were armed with guns.

According to a survey of state attorney offices, the last time a Florida police officer was successfully prosecuted for an on-duty shooting was in 1989.
