FORT MYERS, Fla – A man is dead after a shooting at East Point Place Saturday night.

Fort Myers police were called to the apartments on Dale Street just before 7 p.m. When officers arrived, they found a male who was shot. The victim died at the scene.

“The incident is described as isolated and community members are not in danger,” said Lt. Victor Medico, with FMPD.

WINK News spoke to NAACP President James Muwakkil, who said he was able to hear the gunshots from his home.

“I was standing up at the door when I heard the shots, and I know I heard two. I closed my door, but we did hear it. I only live a few hundred yards from it.”

He says he’s been working with the community to tackle the issues behind the violence, asking them directly for a truce, but still sees countless deaths almost every day.

“I think the community is numb regarding having another murder,” he said. “Sons unborn will be involved in these murders if we don’t end them now. ”

This afternoon, community members gathered at a prayer vigil at First United Methodist Church in Downtown Fort Myers.

Mayor Randy Henderson and Fort Myers Police Chief Dennis Eads were both present, and spoke out, saying “enough is enough.”

One pastor told the community to unite together to”take our streets back, so that lives can be saved and so mother’s and fathers can stop grieving over children lost to violence.”

Police have still not released the name of the man killed, or a description of a suspect.

Police are asking anyone with information to call then at 239-321-7700, or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS.  You can also text C-R-I-M-E-S (274637) Keyword FMPD.
