NAPLES, Fla.- A Collier County man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for running a loan scheme. After his time in prison, Douglas Carter will also serve 10 years of probation after pleading guilty on Thursday to participating in a fraudulent advance fee for loan scam. Carter was also ordered to pay $114,110 in restitution to victims. An investigation revealed that from December 2012 through March 2014, Carter and his co-defendant, James Spillers, used websites such as “lendinguniverse.com” for the elaborate scam, through which more than $185,000 in advance fees were collected from prospective borrowers on the promise of obtaining commercial loans. Spillers also pleaded guilty and received a four-year prison sentence.
