Punta Gorda cracks down on vacation rentals

PUNTA GORDA, Fla.- Popular sites like Airbnb and HomeAway have become a growing problem for some cities like Punta Gorda.

“With the websites out there available and people can just list ordinary residential homes, we’ve seen a proliferation of this in our neighborhoods and with that comes some problems,” said Mayor Rachel Keesling.

A quick search of Airbnb reveals more than 300 listings in Punta Gorda. Anyone can rent out a home from as little as $75 to $750 a night.

“The county is losing out on thousands, and with the websites now, people are out there advertising and you know they are out there advertising, so you know they are gaining the income but they are not remitting any of the taxes,” said Keesling.

Some renters are operating correctly, but the city says the problem is most people don’t know they are supposed to be licensed with the state. Renters must also pay bed taxes. Five percent of the total charged to the visitor is supposed to be returned to the county. Renters use the honor system to pay those taxes.

“They got to pay to play I guess right? I don’t know, it would just be silly if they weren’t following the rules and then that would mess it up for everyone else,” said Jennifer Larmie, a vacation home renter.

Keesling says the city of Punta Gorda doesn’t want to get rid of people renting out their homes, but rather find a better way to monitor it.
