FORT MYERS, Fla.- A man who jumped from the Caloosahatchee Bridge following a car crash is now charged with burglary of an occupied vehicle with battery, leaving the scene of a crash, and resisting arrest.

Fort Myers police arrested 47-year-old Konstantinos Georgiou Tuesday afternoon after he crashed his car on the bridge and ran away from the scene.

Police say Georgiou attempted to get into the cab of a Department of Transportation truck, but when the driver refused to let him in, Georgiou jumped in the bed of the truck.

The truck driver then began driving in reverse toward a Lee County Sheriff’s deputy but Georgiou jumped from the truck and ran toward a blue Ford Focus. Georgiou began punching the front passenger window until it shattered and tried climbing into the car, while the Focus’ driver and passenger fought to keep him out, said police.

Authorities say Georgiou once again began running across the bridge and climbed over the railing to jump into the water below in an effort to avoid arrest.

A Fort Myers Police marine unit found the man hanging onto a bridge support. Georgiou was taken into custody and transported to Lee Memorial Hospital. Once he is medically cleared, Georgiou will be booked into the Lee County Jail.
