TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) – Math scores for Florida’s eighth grade students are dropping according to a new national assessment.

The scores are from the National Assessment of Educational Progress which was released Wednesday. They showed that only 26 percent of eight graders scored at the proficient or advanced levels in math. That’s a significant dip from 2013.

One state Board of Education member called the 8th grade scores a “disaster.”

The assessment known as the nation’s report card showed that 42 percent of 4th graders scored at proficient or advanced levels in math.

In reading 39 percent of fourth grade students scored at proficient or advanced levels in reading. The assessment showed that 30 percent of eighth graders scored at the same levels.

The reading scores are relatively unchanged from those in 2013 and are above or at the national average.
