Orlando man sets up camp for Black Friday

ORLANDO, Fla. (WKMG)- Black Friday may be more than a month away, but one man in Florida has already pitched a tent at a shopping mall.

It’s not all about getting a great deal, Kevin Sutton says he’s living in a tent hoping to help children in need.

“It’s alright, gets a little old sometimes.”

Sutton is brushing his teeth out of a car and reading out of a tent. That’s where he’ll eat, sleep, breathe for the next 32 days.

Sutton is a local radio host camping out of the Best Buy by the Florida Mall.  He’s not doing it for the deals, he’s doing it to create a discussion, garner attention, and encourage donations.

“I want to bring awareness to the homeless children here in central Florida. They did a report just recently that 13,000 children are living homeless here.”

So for the next several weeks, he’ll live with the basics. Sutton may look familiar, he did a Black Friday campout last year for 15 days.

“I’m like, last year we did it and we gave it to the Catholic Charities. All the food that we raised, we did 3 tons last year.”

Sutton says if he can handle the elements for double the time, maybe it’ll translate into double the donations.

“To see a kid’s face not having a meal to eat, or being hungry, I have a 12-year-old daughter, man, and I never want to see myself in that position. But I definitely, if I needed the help, I would hope that somebody out there would do the same for me.”

Besides helping homeless kids, Sutton also wants to break a record set by two women in California last year who camped out for 22 days.
