New details in drowning death of Cape Coral 18-month-old

CAPE CORAL, Fla.- The mother of the 18-month-old who drowned on Thursday, fell asleep after giving the baby a bottle, confirmed Cape Coral police.

The incident report says when she woke up, she found the baby Jaxson in the family pool at the home off Del Prado Boulevard.

“We were on the way to work and did a 180. We got there as fast as we could,” said Timothy Thompson, referring to his friend Bud.

The two were together when they got a call that Bud’s son was found face down in the family pool.

“We started CPR trying to revive him. I thought he was going to come back, you know?”

When police arrived on scene, officers say the baby’s mother told them she fed Jaxson a bottle around noon and that the two of them fell asleep. She said when she woke up at 3 p.m., the baby was gone.

In the same report, the mother told police she searched the house and found the bathroom door that leads to the pool open and the baby in the water.

“There’s alarms on the doors to try to prevent that. They had just moved in the house so they hadn’t had the opportunity to put the barrier up,” Thompson said.

Thompson said the couple adopted Jaxson and that he was their world.

“You see a lot of children and most of them are happy, but he was exceptionally happy and he was exceptionally fun. He had a great laugh and a wonderful smile.”
