NAPLES, Fla.- Collier County Public Schools (CCPS) is helping educate parents on how to keep kids safe on social media.

“If you don’t know what parental monitoring software is, you should,” said CCPS spokesman Greg Turchetta.

The Collier County Sheriff’s Office said handing your child a smartphone or tablet with no restrictions is the worst thing you can do.

“You might as well open up your front door, put a bunch of signs with pictures of your kids, ’cause they’re gonna put pictures online, of them in their bedroom, of them at the beach, wherever it might be, advertising that they’re kids there. Open the front door and say, ‘anyone that wants to come talk to my kid, go ahead,’ because that’s what you’re doing” said Sgt. Wade Williams.

To help educate parents about social media safety, the school district is holding a virtual town hall meeting Tuesday night.

“Our goal is that parents come here for 60 minutes and they walk out with a book, documents and factual information and an action plan with what they need to do to keep their kids safe,” said Turchetta.

He said the most startling thing for parents may be learning they don’t fully understand certain apps like Snapchat and Kik.

“They’ll start on Instagram and they’ll cross over to one of these anonymous apps that the kid doesn’t realize they’re doing something (a) anonymous and (b) that their messages will disappear as soon as they’re read. It gives the crook the angle to get to your child and gives the parent little protection or little evidence anything has happened,” said Turchetta.

The virtual town hall is Tuesday, Oct. 27 from 6 p.m. – 7 p.m. It will be held at three different locations:

  • Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Administrative Center located at 5775 Osceola Trail in Naples
  • Immokalee Technical Center (iTech) located at 508 N 9th Street
  • Everglades City School in Ochopee

A panel of experts will answer parents questions and concerns at that time. Parents can start submitting their questions at collierschools.net or on Twitter using #CCPSsocial.
