OLDSMAR, Fla. (AP) – Lockheed Martin’s 2.25 megawatt solar energy system located in the Tampa Bay area will produce enough energy to power 372 typical homes for a year.

The Tampa Tribune reports that Lockheed Martin launched the project Tuesday. The 7,260 solar panels cover 151,400 square feet of the defense contractor’s parking lot and shade 534 vehicles. They make up the state’s largest private solar array.

The $5 million project could save Lockheed Martin $400,000 a year in power costs.

The company said it intends to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 35 percent and overall energy use by 25 percent by the year 2020.

About 600 employees work at the Oldsmar complex, which is affiliated with Lockheed Martin’s mission systems and training division.
