NORTH NAPLES, Fla.- A missing Collier County woman with dementia has been found alive after an intense 24 hour search.

Two 5th graders spotted Romona Daugs, 55, in their backyard near Candlewood Lane. Dawson Blume and Matthew Thompson found Daugs in swampy water half hidden by the brush. She had only her underwear on so they family gave her a shirt and called 911.

The family had been watching Daugs story and were talking about joining in the search when they spotted her in the backyard. Daugs was taken away on a stretcher and checked out at NCH.

Daugs’ family had last seen her on Monday at her home in the Willoughby Acres community.

More than 100 people from different law enforcement agencies searched for Daugs by ground, air and boat near Airport Pulling and Immokalee roads.

Family members say Daugs is known for going for walks, but she had never been out more than an hour by herself.

Deputies were concerned for Daugs’ safety because of the heat and her medical condition.

“It doesn’t matter in Florida what time of the year it is,” said Lt. Ken Becker with the Collier County Sheriff’s Office, “we have to deal with the heat and needing hydrations and things like that.”

The two boys were excited she was okay and said they felt like “heroes” and thought the community shares.
