BONITA SPRINGS, Fla.- Dozens of students at Bonita Springs Elementary School gathered together to celebrate International Walk to School Day.

They met at the Flamingo Flea Market on Bonita Beach Road, and walked a mile and a half to school.

Some students are regular walkers and for others, it was their first time walking to school.

Members of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Bonita Springs Fire Department, Lee Memorial Health System and other local leaders joined them on the walk to school.

Bonita Elementary was the first school to participate in Walk to School Day in Lee County years ago.

Hundreds of schools across the country took part in some type of walk to school event, including close to 20 in Lee and Collier Counties.

The goal is to promote safety and exercise for students.
