WINTER PARK, Fla. (AP) – A 21-year-old central Florida man is in critical condition after being shot during a confrontation with a sheriff’s deputy.

The shooting happened at a busy intersection Thursday afternoon as deputies pursued a car driven by Christian Joy. Seminole County Sheriff’s Deputy Brian Mahan was shot in the ankle and released from the hospital Thursday night.

The Orlando Sentinel (http://bit.ly/1M5WoBr ) reports Joy was released from prison Sept. 1 after serving two years following a conviction for selling marijuana and being a convicted felon in possession of a gun.

Authorities say Joy’s car matched one believed to be involved in a series of home burglaries. When they tried to pull him over, Joy didn’t stop. A chase continued for several miles before the confrontation.

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating possible charges.
