Dog abuse goes viral, CCPD investigating

CAPE CORAL, Fla.- Several videos posted online showing a teen hurting a dog are now under investigation by the Cape Coral Police Department.

Three dogs were removed from a north Cape Coral home after tips began flooding in to CCPD and Lee County Domestic Animal Services (LCDAS) of the abuse posted to the popular social network Vine.

“We need people to say something if they see something wrong. An animal that looks unhappy, a child that looks unhappy, they need to report that,” said Kelly Legarreta with the Gulf Coast Humane Society.

Officials say there were a total of 13 Vine videos showing the teen abusing and torturing the dogs date back as far as April. Some of them show the dogs being hit with a basketball and an open fist.

“They acted it on as fast as possible, we are so grateful,” said Legarreta. “Some of us didn’t even know the videos had been taken a while ago, and if no one brings them to light, no one knows they’re there.”

A police report states animal services told police they opened a criminal case involving two dogs at the home which had to do with a property crime. CCPD is not releasing further information while the case remains under investigation.
