SANIBEL, Fla.- The City of Sanibel has closed down the eastern end of Periwinkle Way after what city leaders call the worst flooding in a decade.

The city manager’s office says the road that leads into Sanibel’s popular Lighthouse Park will be closed until the rain stops and they’re able to repair the street. City leaders say more shell will be brought in to fill the road where it has been washed away.

“We’d like to keep the cars out of the Gulf of Mexico,” said City Manager Judy Zimomra.

The city says rainfall and high tides are to blame. The area has seen more than 2.5 inches of rain in 24 hours, according to WINK News meteorologists.

“I’ve been here now 14 years and I’d say this is in the top two or three and one of those included a hurricane,” said Zimomra.

The roads leading to the fishing pier and the Gulfside Beach parking lot are still open.
