Deputies investigate NFM shooting

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Lee County deputies are investigating a shooting near West Mariana Avenue and Piney Road. Neighbors say they heard several gunshots and saw a white truck drive by.

“I had a friend text me that there was a shooting on our block and I didn’t hear anything. I was on my way to work and was like, ‘what do you mean there was a shooting?'” said Rachel Chandler, who lives nearby.

Chandler says the shooting hits too close to home and she fears parts of Lee County are going downhill.

“Red flags. Lee County is not safe no more. There’s got to be something done, this isn’t okay,” Chandler said.

Sonia Evans lives across the street from where deputies were investigating. She says her mom heard gunshots and then saw a man running away and getting into a car down the street.

“Everybody was just outside looking over there. That guy was shot I guess twice in the chest like right here and right here,” Evans said while pointing to her chest.

Because of the recent shootings in the Fort Myers Dunbar neighborhood earlier this week, the news of yet another shooting didn’t sit well with some Lee County families. Many chimed in on the WINK News Facebook page, one person wrote, “what is happening to Fort Myers?” Another said, “I heard the gunshots less than a block away, never have I ever considered leaving more than now.”

People who live near West Mariana Avenue and Piney Road couldn’t agree more.

“With what happened in Dunbar–over out in Dunbar–I was so worried about it happening here and then today, right across the street,” Evans said.

“We don’t want that around this area. We don’t need it, we don’t want it. We have families around here,” Chandler said.

At this point, it is not clear if anyone was hurt or if there are suspects on the loose. Trust WINK News to update this story as more information becomes available.
