Family members of woman shot by husband speak out

FORT MYERS, Fla.- A woman remains in the hospital recovering from the multiple bullets that pierced her body.

Police say 51-year-old Ygnacio Sanchez shot his wife Petra multiple times in the head and neck. The Sunday night shooting sparked a search and later a standoff.

“All we know is he was drunk that day, got his gun and he shot her,” said Petra’s daughter-in-law Krystal Ortiz.

The victim’s family says her life at home with her husband was anything but ideal.

“He used to be the man where if she wanted to go out it was a ‘no,’ if she wanted to buy something, it was a ‘no,'” said Ortiz.

Now, Petra Sanchez is in a hospital bed at Lee Memorial facing a long road ahead.

“Petra is holding up, she has lost her left eye and she has a fracture. Right now, she can’t speak and she isn’t capable of breathing on her own,” said Ortiz.

Sanchez can only squeeze her family’s hands and shake her head yes or no.

“Hopefully it’s a call out for people in domestic violence situations to speak up before it gets to this point.”

Ortiz says the horrific scene on Sunday played out in front of a 5-year-old girl Petra Sanchez has been watching since she was born.

“When grandma got shot by her husband, she saw it and she ran. Her mom called us because she can’t sleep, she’s asking, she is traumatized.”

Sanchez’s family says she still has to have another surgery scheduled and they’ve set up a GoFundMe account to help with the costs. Her husband is in jail facing attempted murder charges.
