Dog killed after being dragged behind truck

NAPLES, Fla.- Collier County Domestic Animal Services says a small pet dog was dragged to death by a truck on Thursday.

Officials believe the Yorkie-type dog was killed by accident.

“That’s what our understanding is. It’s still under investigation. We now know who the dog owner is, so an officer has been assigned to go out there to him to find out exactly what happened,” said department director Darcy Andrade.

The small dog was dragged to death behind a small truck near Everglades Boulevard and Oil Well Road in Golden Gate Estates. The truck was driven by a friend of the dog’s owner.

“From my understanding, it was a friend that was visiting, and the dog was tied to the bumper and they were not aware. So they were not aware the dog was obviously getting drug behind the vehicle.”

Andrade says the pet’s owner, Alfredo Valente, came into the shelter Friday morning to identify the dog.
The shelter director says Valente was crying and upset at the loss and death of his small dog.

“I thought of it from my standpoint as well, as a pet owner. If that happened to me, if I accidentally did this and I drove off… it’s just, it’s hard to comprehend what the dog owner is going through at this time,” said Andrade.

At this point, the dog’s owner is not facing any charges.
