TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) – A man was fatally shot while trying to break up a fight between his girlfriend and her armed ex-husband, police said.

Sheldon Maurice Rogers confronted Moise Joseph and his girlfriend with a gun at their home early Sunday, according to Tallahassee Police.

Joseph stepped between Rogers and his girlfriend, telling her to run, police said.

According to police, Rogers shot Joseph several times. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said Joseph saved his girlfriend’s life, allowing her to run to safety and call 911. She was not injured.

The couple was returning from a date when Rogers confronted them, police spokesman David Northway told The Tallahassee Democrat (http://on.tdo.com/1QcoGNO).

Officers stopped Rogers as he was driving away from the area.

Rogers was held without bail on premeditated murder and aggravated assault charges. His first appearance is scheduled Tuesday. Leon County jail records didn’t know whether he had an attorney.

Police have not released the name of Joseph’s girlfriend. According to court documents obtained by the Democrat, Rogers and Joseph’s girlfriend divorced in 2013 and share custody of their 7-year-old son.

Joseph was a biologist who published research on cancer and belonged to a Florida A&M University network for scientists, according to the Democrat.
