FMPD: 16-year-old accidentally shoots himself

FORT MYERS, Fla.- Fort Myers police say a 16-year-old accidentally shot himself Sunday, and he could face charges.

It happened around 3 p.m. Sunday in the 100 block of Lucille Avenue.

When police first responded, the 16-year-old said he was shot by someone in the shoulder while walking down the street.

The teenager had non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital.

Detectives met with the victim and witnesses and immediately began noticing discrepancies with various accounts of the incident. While at the hospital, the victim confessed to accidentally shooting himself with a firearm while exiting a vehicle.

The investigation remains on-going and possible criminal charges are pending.
