Estero celebrates first Coach Jeff Sommer Day

ESTERO, Fla. – The City of Estero came together Saturday, celebrating the first Coach Jeff Sommer day.

Sommer passed away at just 58 years old in May during a track meet, shortly after his team won a state title. Family, friends, and the Estero community have been trying to find a way to honor his legacy ever since.

Staff at Estero High School reached out to the City of Estero, and the idea of Coach Jeff Sommer day was born.

“I think that them being able to say that there’s a day in his honor, every year will help to teach any new students who he truly was,” said Sommer’s daughter, Jennie West.

The day will be held every year during the Estero High School D3 invite.

“Whether it’s the school or the whole community, how much they put together is amazing,” said Sommer’s wife, Sue Sommer. “It took a lot of people to put this together they did an incredible job.”
