MIAMI (AP) – Police are investigating following the death of a teenager who was being held at the state’s juvenile detention facility in Miami.

The Miami-Dade Police Department reported Tuesday that its homicide detectives are investigating the death of 17-year-old Elord Revolte.

Revolte was staying at the Juvenile Detention Center – run by the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice – following an arrest in Miami Beach. Police say a fight involving as many as 20 inmates on Sunday led to Revolte being injured. He was initially treated by medical staff at the facility but then transported the next day to a nearby hospital, where he died.

Police say an official cause of death is awaiting a medical examiner’s report.

Juvenile Justice Secretary Christina Daly called the teen’s death “heartbreaking” in a prepared statement. She says her department has also initiated its own investigation.
