Tropical Storm Fred moving away from Cape Verde Islands

MIAMI (AP) – Tropical Storm Fred is moving farther away from the Cape Verde Islands and is expected to weaken.

The storm’s maximum sustained winds Tuesday are near 50 mph (80 kph).

Fred is centered about 255 miles (410 kilometers) northwest of the Cape Verde Islands and is moving west-northwest near 10 mph (16 kph).

Meanwhile in the Pacific, Hurricane Jimena has weakened but remains a powerful Category 4 storm with maximum sustained winds near 120 mph (193 kph). Jimena is centered about 1,000 miles (1609 kilometers) east of Hilo, Hawaii, and is moving west near 10 mph (16 kph).

Also in the Pacific, a tropical depression is expected to become a tropical storm later in the day. The depression has maximum sustained winds near 35 mph (55 kph). It’s centered about 725 miles (1167 kilometers) south-southwest of the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula and is moving west-northwest near 8 mph (13 kph).
