RV takes a dive into Charlotte Harbor canal

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – A day after a family camper ended up in a Charlotte Harbor canal, the owners were finally able to save their home.

It was an unfortunate sight at the Charlotte Harbor RV Park. Neighbors couldn’t believe their eyes as they snapped pictures of the bobbing camper.

“I looked over and saw the camper just kinda slide off into the canal back here and it floated for bout a second and then just started sinking,” said Melissa Hamilton, manager of the RV park.

A family of six was getting ready to call Port Charlotte home, but before they could, their camper went for a swim.

“They put the rims down and were cranking it off and the cable snapped and it just rolled on down the ramps and into the water,” said Hamilton.

The camper was brought in on a flatbed when the chain securing the camper snapped.

“It’s not even livable, we’re not going to be able to live in this thing now and it was nice inside. I mean it don’t look nice on the outside, but inside it was in good shape, everything worked perfect,” said the RV owner David Scott.

Neighbors were able to get the camper halfway up the hill. However, the tires couldn’t grip the ground and the wheels continued to spin.

Tuesday afternoon, a local towing company pulled the RV out of the canal at no cost to the owner.
