TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) – Florida’s Guardian ad Litem program is giving nearly 1,000 suitcases to foster children.

Child welfare officials say many children come into foster care after they have been taken abruptly from their home with few or no belongings of their own and are often forced to carry the belonging they do have in a garbage bag. Foster children are appointed guardian ad litems to advocate in their best interest.

The suitcases were collected by the Women’s Council of Realtors Florida State Chapter.

Guardian ad Litem executive director Alan Abramowitz said some of the women got so involved in the collection process that they ended up becoming volunteer guardians.
