Homeowner assesses damage from Saturday’s storm

FORT MYERS, Fla. – A homeowner on Morse Plaza said he was shocked to find a massive tree split in half on his front lawn Saturday afternoon.

High winds and rain swept through parts of Lee County around 5 p.m. Saturday. Tom Beirne said he heard the commotion outside his home during the storm but never expected to see to see so much damage.

“Not only this tree…that ruined this tree, three trees over there on the side,” said Beirne. “They just ruined all them, all of ’em!”

Beirne said he has been in touch with his insurance company and plans to have the tree removed Monday.

At the same time, on Palm Beach Boulevard just east of Interstate 75, Florida Highway Patrol reported a tornado touched down. An EMS station and Forest Service building had parts of its roof thrown onto the yard and several branches were tossed along the yard.

The National Weather Service has not confirmed if a tornado touched down in Lee County.
